  • Our Aboriginal corporation was granted three million dollars for the refurbishment and extension of its residential rehabilitation centre. The organisation is located in a remote area of the Kimberley where employment oppotunities for young people are minimal.A Project officer was employed and rather than bring in contractors the organisation searched locally for Indigenous tradesmen, we found a carpenter\joiner and a painter. Both of these men were concerned at the number of young people in the town who were drinking, smoking marijuana and at times getting into trouble. The organisation felt thet the capital works project would be an ideal opportunity to work with some of these young men. The local TAFE and Kimberley Group Training were contacted, we worked together in developing a project that would result in the young men receiving accredited training while on the job. Eight young men aged between 16 and 25 years 0f age were recruited for the project. None of them had previously been employed on a fulltime basis. Comming to work every day for a full day proved challenging to the group and in the beginning they worked four hours a day.Over the last three months Counselors within the organisation have worked with the young men and they have been encouraged and supported the problems encountered are dealt with and the young men have now completed certificate 1 in building and maintenance and are currently working towards certificate 2. The group is working well together and now put in a full days work, their profile within the community has risen and the project has caused a great deal of community interest. For the organisation the project has been both exciting and challenging, we are now looking at the organisation having a local Indigenous Building and Maintenance crew for the town of Wyndham.
