Hepatitis C assessment and management in the opioid treatment program setting
Opioid treatment program (OTP) clients have very high levels of hepatitis C (HCV) infection. Despite increases in the safety and efficacy of HCV treatment and an apparent interest in HCV treatment by OTP clients, assessment and uptake of HCV treatment has remained low. Recent research has also identified variable levels of HCV knowledge among OTP staff, with particular deficits in knowledge around testing and diagnosis, natural history, and treatment. The aim of this workshop is to provide an overview of HCV assessment, including treatment preparation and work-up, in the OTP setting. A workshop addressing practical and clinical issues involved in engaging OTP clients in HCV assessments will be delivered. Issues addressed include 1) HCV knowledge, covering key aspects of epidemiology, natural history, treatment and strategies for improving client education and knowledge; 2) aspects of basic clinical care, including ordering and interpreting appropriate tests; 3) treatment issues, including specialist support. An overview of HCV clinic set-up issues will also be provided. A number of practical OTP-specific resources will be introduced.
