Recovery - The SMART Way

  • S.M.A.R.T Recovery (Self Management and Recovery Training) is a self-help group treatment program based on cognitive behavioural therapy. The aim of the program is to empower the participants by providing useful information and teaching practical strategies to assist their recovery from harmful addictive behaviours.SMART Recovery teaches people to understand overcoming their addictive thoughts and behaviours by learning and utilising the tools of the program. SMART Recovery works closely with the Department of Corrective Services who runs the program in all their facilities in NSW, Queensland and Tasmania. Rural areas are being targeted and the program adapted for indigenous populations and Youth.
    SMART Recovery is a structured interactive group that is based on 4 points:-
    • Building and maintaining motivation
    • Coping with urges
    • Problem solving
    • Lifestyle balance
    The aim of this workshop is to demonstrate how SMART Recovery is applicable to all addictions, demonstrate solution focused methods and provide skill training on CBT and REBT in a group setting.
    The role play will be assist the group facilitator in helping the individual see the alternative ways of thinking and appraising a situation and to help the individual identify any obstacles to thinking and acting in this new and more helpful way.
    The tools used in the SMART Recovery group will be demonstrated. These include the ABC’s of rational thinking – looking at the Activating Events, Beliefs and Consequences and how you can learn to dispute negative thoughts and emotions. The Cost Benefit Analysis will look at the pros and cons of any addiction – identifying some of the underlying issues and what is the driving force of the individual. Coping with Urges covers understanding a craving or urge and teaches coping strategies. These tools will be demonstrated in the context of how they underpin the SMART Recovery program.
